Van Dexter Design History

Once you know the history behind Van Dexter Design, the quality and expertise you find in their work is understandable. In the early 70’s, Erik at age 12, found a hobby working with wood. By age 14, he had acquired his own collection of basic hand tools. Though the workmanship was perhaps a bit crude, it fostered his desire to pursue this hobby as a vocation. Erik spent many hours in the high school woodshop under the guidance of influential teachers like Mr. Leo Rolt and Mr. Charles Morris collaborating to fine-tune Erik's skills and strong passion to work with wood. Erik received several awards and accolades for the various student craft events. At age 16, Erik began working part time as a cabinetmaker's apprentice. That was when he realized that cabinetmaking was in his future.

After graduating Washington Township High School in 1977, Erik began working full time for the same company and continued to do so for the next 20 years. In 1995, he was encouraged by others to branch out on his own. A humble start and a strong commitment to excellence had the business rolling in just a few short months. In less than nine months, his brother Kristian joined up with Erik and together they expanded to a larger facility located in Pitman, New Jersey. Kristian brought to the table 12 years of cabinetry experience specializing in cabinetry installation and solid surface fabrication and most importantly the strong ethical values that are paramount in this organization. With these key factors in place, they worked tirelessly to build a reputation as the finest cabinetmakers around.

Within a year they out grew the new Pitman facility, and again, started plans for expansion. By this time, the growing staff was limited by the square footage available, so a 5000 square foot facility was planned in Washington Township., an increase five times the size of the Pitman building. By the summer of 2001, the new facility at 116 Densten Road was up and running. The new showroom was ready to open and our team had been increased to ten people. Within the next two and a half years, Van Dexter Design’s business and reputation has skyrocketed and their core company philosophy is steadily helping the company to grow.

As they venture forward, in only three short years, expansion plans are being formulated. Continued reinvestment into Van Dexter Design is an important part of their success in order to provide their clients with the best quality and service possible. When recently asked, Erik stated, “our clients today are looking for spaces that are unique to their individual lifestyle and family needs. We have in the past, and will continue to position ourselves to provide this personal approach to serve their needs effectively. That is what Van Dexter Design is all about.”
